Trains! - Final Showcase - Boys & Girls Clubs (Willie Mays Clubhouse)

B&GClub (Winter 2019), BGCSF TrainKatie McClungComment

This week concluded our 8 week long session at Willie Mays Boys and Girls Club. It was an exciting journey from start to finish, and we ended it on a high note with a thrilling train ride that our tinkerers built themselves!

At the final session we broke up into three groups to finish our main project elements: The tunnel, the train car, and the track (complete with ramp!) We had a lot of parts that had to fit together in order to work well and keep the train moving along.

This project was a great example of making multiple iterations and testing, then re-testing. During the last two sessions the tracks had to be modified and cut down, the axles had to be replaced and re-adjusted, AND we had to move/adjust the wheels multiple times… but we did it and it worked!

Trains - Weeks 5-7 - Boys & Girls Clubs (Willie Mays Clubhouse)

It’s the final countdown! Only one more week left at Willie Mays Boys and Girls Clubhouse.

In the past few weeks our group finished three 8 foot long sections of train track. They even built a steep ramp off the indoor staircase to pick up a little speed! After a group design session, they also came up with ideas for the train car and (potentially) a tunnel for the train to run through. We’re all excited for this train to hit the tracks!

The Willie Mays Boys and Girls Club tinkerers are building full steam ahead! The past two weeks have been super busy! With some new materials and lots of group collaboration, the tracks are laid for our next adventure as we get our trains rolling.

At tinkering school, we always find a partner to carry long or heavy building materials. One person on each end so we don’t accidentally make helicopters!

Happy 2019!

We’re excited to start another fun after school tinkering session with Willie Mays clubhouse (Boys & Girls Clubs of SF). This session we are excited to welcome two new assistant collaborators Assata and Audrey to our group!

During our first day together we jumped into tool safety training and revealed our new project theme… TRAINS!

Once all of our Tinkerers knew how to use the chop saw, drill, and clamps, we were ready to start designing and building and bring our designs to life. By the end of the afternoon we had 4 sections of 8 foot long train track already finished!

Stay tuned next week to come along for the ride! Who knows where this train will take us!
