Strengthening a Floor (and a Design)

On our forth session first we finished attaching all the support beams to our floor's frame and began reinforcing the four corners from where we plan to suspend the room from the schools ceiling's structural supports. 

The reinforcing involved building out the corners about 3 inches in all directions. This called for a LOT of heavy duty drilling and driving of 3" screws (not such an easy task for a young kid). Lot's of hands were needed to work in pairs to measure, cut and clamp supports while other teams worked on attaching them. 

It can be difficult to stay focused when doing such repetitive work so we all took a break to explain the importance of safety and the structural soundness that is required to lift an 8'x8' room into the air. Since our room is going to be lifted from the floor it needs to be strong enough to not only hold the weight of the room but all of us as well! 

We circled up at the end of the day to review and update our updated master plan with the supports we had added. Although the floor didn't look much different by the end of our working session the group was pretty excited to know that we were in a place begin sheathing it the following week!  


Tuesday's Helping Hands

On the third working session for our floating room there was some talk and excitement surrounding the idea of building a webbed wall but after a quick circle up we agreed that before we could begin building walls we needed a sturdy floor to stand them on. With all hands on board we continued to work on the framing and support for the floor.

Our second tuesday after school session, picked right up where we left off with completing tool training. Drills are fairly complex tools so we took our time reviewing their various "bits" before we practiced drilling holes and driving screws.

Prepared with the knowledge of how to use the basic tools in our shop, the kids are egger to begin building. But what?!? We circle up in the art studio to reveal our sessions project.. A FLOATING ROOM! 

Each prepared with blank paper and pencils to capture our ideas we begin to draw and design. How big is it? What is made of? How will it float? What does the room look like?

After we drain our brains we take the time to share our thoughts and create a master plan that brings our ideas together.   

We agree that suspending the room by a pulley system is best, so faced with new constraints of where the floating room will hang we take some time inspect the shop space, considering it's space and size. We learn that not all rafters are load bearing and so choosing the right location proves to be a really important first step. Once we have selected a space it's time to determine size. 

We finish the day with the beginnings of frame for of the floor for our floating room. What a wonderful working session
