THURSDAY TINKERING AFTERSCHOOL - FINAL SESSION!

Mr. Potato (Fall 2016)Sage RyanComment

Its our final session; everyone is excited but also wondering if it will all get finished, so first the tinkerers gather to figure out what we've finished... and whats left to be done.

Just as we were getting to start to finish and we realized Mr.Potato Head needed a mustache, arms and legs.  So, we relied on our division of labor and small collaborative groups; divvied up the work.

The arm and leg group strategized to create limbs with joints and then get to work on the most exiting part, the fingers!!

Here, Elise and Portia measure out specific lengths for each finger.

Once they had a  cut list, the crew needed to figure out what they wanted to use to make the fingers, so we took to scrap alley. The tinkerers found an interesting and exiting material, foam!!

Abandoning the ideas of individual fingers, the team took to planning out whole hands and feet!!

Meanwhile, the mustache team had realized that with their mustache finished, they should move on to our final task... attaching the body parts to Mr. Potato Head!!

Together they worked to screw in an extra support shelf to hold it.

Across the shop, the arms and legs group had finished cutting out the hands. And so all the tinkerers converged on the head to attach every possible body part!

They worked, and drilled, and screwed, and drilled, and screwed, and worked as we arrived upon our end time, we saw that it may not be possible to attach every single part. Is that okay??

YES!

The Tinkerers finished without ears, without an attached mustache, and without attached feet. However, they finished with a Mr. Potato Head. And what came with their Mr. Potato Head was weeks of new knowledge, friendships, skills, and experiences. The crew stands tall with their giant masterpiece, looking forward!

THURSDAY TINKERING SCHOOL - SESSION 7!!!

Mr. Potato (Fall 2016)Sage RyanComment

This Thursday, the crew jumped back into the flow of things, moving Mr. Potato Head's features along. Last week, a smaller group finished securing and stabilizing Mr. Potato Head's actual head, and panelling it with a face... while another group got pretty far on the big rectangular nose. In addition, the mouth and the eyes needed a rebuilding. So, needless to say, the group had to decide where to focus their attention today.

We decided that we'd split, once more, into two groups. One team decided to finish up the nose, while the rest of us began work on a brand new set of eyes. The design meeting for the eyes went fairly quickly because the tinkerers had already made the first set of eyes a couple weeks ago. So we traced some eyes and got to work on the band-saw.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the shop, the nose team finished the nosey rectangle.

Then they decided that their next step should be to panel it with plywood, so as soon as the eye-group was finished with the band-saw, they headed over.

And while they were on the band saw, the eye group worked away on a tool we haven't used in a little while, the DRILL PRESS. The crew decided that it would be aesthetically beneficial to drill pupils into our plywood eyes.

The day ended with some pretty awesome results! The nose group, having cut their green-nose-panels, began to screw them in...

...and the eye group finished both eyes and colored them!!! They aren't quite attached, but we're getting there. Seeing the body parts on Mr. Potato's enormous head was quite the gratifying sight!!

THURSDAY TINKERING SCHOOL - WEEK 6!!!!

Mr. Potato (Fall 2016)Sage RyanComment

At the beginning of the day we found out from a round of thumb-o-meters that the rainy day had brought some folks down..

But despite the subtle gloom, the tinkerers jumped back into the projects and split once more into a a HEAD group and NOSE group! ..continuing the portions be worked on last week..

THE MASSIVE HEAD, now secured and ready to be paneled...

..had the crew at the bandsaw, slicing up plywood they'd measured to fit the project.

Simultaneously, the nose crew drilled away at the pieces they'd cut last week to create the quite large, and sturdy, rectangular nose for our MR. POTATO HEAD..

As the day went on.. it was astonishing how hard work the tinkerers did, how much fun they had, and how focused they were, no matter what anybody had said about being down on a rainy day!!

On a cold and quiet Thursday, the Tinkering Shop was hot and bustling, as everyone put their all into continuing our enormous face of a project!

THURSDAY TINKERING SCHOOL - SESSION 5!!

Mr. Potato (Fall 2016)Sage RyanComment

This week, the Tinkerers haven't been back at it for a whole two weeks!!  But boy did they make up for that time. Today was had a smooth beginning. Our first four sessions entailed a whole lot of designing and planning. But at the end of our last session, we had a moment where every thing sort of fell together. So when we came in today, everyone was ready to pick up exactly where we left off and go full steam ahead on our solid idea!!

What started off as an enormous nose has had the consensus to become the head/body...

P1140947.JPG

the flow of today had one group securing the head and preparing it to bear the wait of all the body parts..

P1140932.JPG

and another continuing to build those very parts! most of the day, this group spent time outlining ears on plywood.. and taking it to the band saw!

P1140924.JPG

The body grouped finished their day off ALSO on the band saw.. cutting the panels to line the skeleton of a face we built..

P1140940.JPG

while the ear group began designing a new nose!! (this was a wonderful period of focus and collaboration)!

P1140928.JPG

During closing circle, both groups reconvened and spent a few minutes drawing on pieces of paper what they did today, and how they helped.

The exercise helped the group reflect a little on the work they've been doing, how they've been working together, the friends they've made, the progress they've made, and how gosh darn cool the project AND the project actually are!!

Thursdays, Week 3 - MR. POTATOHEAD!

Mr. Potato (Fall 2016)Sage RyanComment

Our last session was pretty geared towards designing and planning our project. Today we actually had the WHOLE SESSION to build!

Last week we separated into two groups to begin on our first two body parts for mister potato head. Today those body parts came a long way!!

His nose has evolved into an enormous rectangle that Tinkerers may be able to sit in!!!

And after the eyebrows group finished their big bushy eyebrows....

They moved on to building a pair of big round eyes!!

While making the eyes, this group learned how to use both the band saw!!~~~

AND the drill press!

P1060294.JPG

There was also a whole bunch of practicing with the tools we learned last week. The tinkerers are getting more comfortable in the space, with the tools, and with their projects, exited to continue building Fall's MISTER POTATO HEAD!

Tinkering After School Thursday Sessions - Week 2!!

Mr. Potato (Fall 2016)Sage RyanComment

On their second Thursday together, the tinkerers found out what theyre going to be building this fall!!

Everyone seemed to be pretty stoked on a GIANT MISTER POTATO HEAD concept...

So after reviewing our tinkering school goals, we got to designing!!

From there, we split up into two groups working on two different chosen body parts. We arrived at the eyebrows....

....And the nose!!

Although some parts of the project got a bigger head start than others, there was an explosion of ideas, collaboration, and design tinkering that will whoosh us into next week's session with excitement and invention!
