Day 2 – Life-Size Drill Carts
Tuesday July 14th 2009, 12:01 am

Yesterday’s model carts using motors to drive the wheels were just a warm-up for today’s project: drill-powered carts. All three teams were able to get locomotion, although all require some additional tuning before the big race. The Piki team were first on the test track, and with their smaller drivers they don’t need as much power (which is a good thing). The Kablooi team were up next, with their Harley-style steering and comfort seating. Will their double tie-down system hold their drills in place long enough to finish the race, though? Finally the Nooi team may have to choose between steering and power, based on their test run that required both hands to augment their drill pressure and keep the cart moving. Stay tuned for the final results. Meanwhile, here are the highlights from today’s action.

Design Tableau

Design TableauJulianna works on a color-coded specification for her team’s vehicle.

Boys Room

Boys RoomLess than 24 hours after arrival, the Boys’ Room is clearly… the Boys’ Room. It also has space for the spare furniture, so doubles as the hang-out room.

Back in the Barn

Back in the BarnAfter lunch, the teams get serious about getting their vehicles moving. Gus appears to be in a bit of a post-lunch stupor. Maybe he’s just trying to remember where he left his safety googles?

Ghost Busting

Ghost BustingSam is either preparing to mark the cut lines for the fancy triangular platform for their car, or banishing the demons from this place.

Drill Pressing

Drill PressingIn order to have wheels turning, you need axles. And to put axles in wood it’s great to have some holes. The teams line up for their turn at the drill press. Piper favors the cross-handed technique. Leo is fascinated by this.

Measure Twice

Measure TwiceLiz reviews best practices with Anna while Fiona checks the measurements for the Harley-style steering fork.

Stand Back!

Stand Back!Robyn has warned her team that they are using a slightly exotic configuration for the chop-saw. Theo grabs Carter to remind him that safety goggles work better than karate chops when defending yourself from flying sawdust.

Drill Angel

Drill AngelSam’s ghost-busting appears to have worked, as he is graced by the heaven’s above as he prepares the drill for cart-mounting.

Tribal Conference

Tribal ConferenceElena checks the fit of the drill mount while the rest of the Piki evaluate.

Chopping Cardboard

Chopping CardboardGus is building a protective cover for the overly long axle bolt. Gever agrees to try chopping the heavy-duty cardboard beam on the chop-saw, which creates voluminous clouds of paper dust. Gus is not impressed.

A Straight Shot

A Straight ShotNik’s fancy fly-fishing sunglasses work great as safety googles – often he is the only one with a clear view of the work area. Nice power-driving technique – those 5 years of Tinkering School are paying off!

Please, please, please work!

Please, please, please work!Julianna’s fancy reined steering system has been embraced by her teammates. She gives it a pep talk.

Piki Transport

Piki TransportThe littlest tribe fortunately has the littlest vehicle so that they can transport it to the test track without assistance.

RoShamBo for First Ride

RoShamBo for First RideWho gets the coveted first ride on the first vehicle to be drive-tested? Scissors (Elena!) cuts paper.

Let’s Go!

LetThe Piki are eager to see their cart fly across the barn. Locomotion occurs, but the tendency of riders to grab the tires/drills results in a revamp to add fenders.

Glam Clamp

Glam ClampAnna’s lost suitcase still hasn’t arrived, but she insists she isn’t just showing off wearing white and avoiding being covered in dirt and sawdust. Here she demonstrates her dainty (yet effective) clamping technique.

Meteor Flames

Meteor FlamesCarter has christened their cart “The Meteor” and is decorating one fender to that effect.

Nice Llama!

Nice Llama!Gever agrees to go say hi to the llama, since the rest of us are afraid we’ll be spit on. He actually manages to pet it, but we were all really hoping he’d get spit on again so we could see it this time.

The Meteor #2

The Meteor #2Gus prepares the second fender for The Meteor.

Practice Pays Off

Practice Pays OffLeo has been practicing his drilling and power-driving technique all day. Luckily he is just as good at extracting screws as he is at installing them, or all the tables would be covered in 2×4s.

Finished Fender

Finished FenderElena and Carter assess their finished fender. It looks good both coming and going, says Carter.

Mr. Casual

Mr. CasualSams acts aloof, but doesn’t fool Theo.

Don’t Mind Me

DonSteve demonstrates his stealthy approach to getting great casual shots of the teams.

It’s That Time of Day

ItThe carts are nearly finished, and decoration activities are in full swing.

Yes, Theo

Yes, TheoAnna confirms the seat attachment plan with the Little Boss.

Nooi License Plates

Nooi License PlatesJulianna and Piper work on the front and back plates for their vehicle.

Where There is a Will…

Where There is a Will...Carter pre-visualizes crossing the finish line first.

Success!

Success! Not only is it comfortable, the Kablooi cart really moves. Sam looks like he can hardly believe it (clearly Anna never had a doubt).

It Moved!

It Moved!Anna shows her typically restrained reaction, while her teammates try to contain their excitement about seeing the cart finally work.

Can’t Help Herself

CanFiona finally cracks a smile when the cart finally maintains its momentum (thanks to a double-sided tie-down system).

Nooi Conference

Nooi ConferenceThe typical problem with the drill-powered cart design is getting sufficient friction on the wheels. The Nooi solution using rubber covers on the drills isn’t holding up, so modifications are in order.

Ride ‘Em Cowgirl!

Ride Julianna’s rein-style steering isn’t getting a workout yet, but her trusty steed has taken off at last.

Push Harder, Nik!

Push Harder, Nik!Nikhil uses every ounce of effort to push the drills against the tires in order to get the cart to move. Some sort of assistance device might be in order.

After Dinner Deconstruction

After Dinner DeconstructionAnna and Julianna make quick work of the first thing they grab out of the bin.

Should I Remove These?

Should I Remove These?Sam can’t quite believe he’s been told to completely disassemble this drill. He decides to make sure he heard it right before doing anything extreme (for a change :-).

Determined Disassembler

Determined DisassemblerPiper has also tackled drill dissassembly, but like everyone else, she is slowed down by the barrel. Unlike everyone else, she manages to pry it apart using the vice!

Just One More Screw

Just One More ScrewNik and Elena team up – that thing (whatever it was!) doesn’t stand a chance.

Load Her Up!

Load Her Up!Elena volunteers to help carry some sawhorses back to the ranchhouse. Robyn agrees to stack them up as requested, but Liz isn’t so sure about that.

Plywood Parade

Plywood ParadeSeveral of the kids insist on helping to carry the plywood back to the ranchhouse. The parade makes it half-way there before tradeoffs are in order.

Curious Sheep

Curious SheepJulie and Theo head to the hill. The sheep are curious, but frightened, but curious, but frightened. They can’t decide whether to watch or flee.

Fly, Be Free!

Fly, Be Free!Theo tests the model glider he built during his spare time today(!). The sheep decided it wasn’t interesting enough so they left. Maybe they’ll be back for the updated version tomorrow (needs wider wing-span for better stability, says Theo).

Your Moment of Zen

First cart test-run. First Piki driver. First gear = reverse!

I love this journal. You cannot imagine how good it is watch this venture. Not many opportunities here in the UK (over-zealous health and safety regs)
Many thanks Gever and the team. Marianne

Thanks for the extensive posting! Great to see them in action, they look like they’re having a ball! Can I come next summer??
