Blocks and Plates – Part 1

First, build a box.
I started thinking about chairs and how the measurements of a chair don’t really match the unit sizes that are in our construction kits. Building a simple set of legs like this would be easy, and probably strong enough, but the legs would either be too short or too long depending on which of the plate sizes were used…

The crooked chair.
With no real notion of where I was going, I started with a cantilevered leg. By creating a joint in the leg I could use two 16″ plates to create a less than 32″ tall chair.

The problem with this is that to get the bent leg to be strong you have to brace it – a lot.

The rotated chair.
This one looks really stable. Maybe it’s designed to let you sit on the peak of your house – a rooftop reading chair.

The designer chair.
This one uses blocks on the ends of the legs to create a stable footing and angled legs to get the right height.

Also, I think it’s possible to set the back and seat angle to something a little less strict than the 90 degree approaches above.
