Camp Steward (Summer 2017)
Come provision and cook for Tinkering School Overnight Camp, located at beautiful Richard J. Elkus Ranch in Half Moon Bay, California! Every week a new group of bright, inquisitive and creative kids comes to camp to design, build and create together. We are looking for a steward to keep them fed and supplied.
The Camp Steward lives on site at camp and is responsible for planning, budgeting, shopping, and preparing daily meals to include breakfast and dinner, as well as mobile lunch and snacks for 20 campers plus 6-8 staff each week. Culinary requirements are relatively simple and there are some traditions to honor with plenty of room to exhibit your creativity. In the past, campers have enjoyed meals such as homemade macaroni and cheese, taco bar, lasagna, and burger and dog night. You will need to be prepared to provide both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, as well as provide for occasional gluten free, vegan, food allergen or other special dietary needs. We do not require kosher compliance.
The kitchen you will be using is well furnished with a catering quality range, ovens refrigerator and freezer. Your primary supply points are approximately an hour away, so being well organized is key, with a weekly main supply run and a late week resupply being typical. Provisioning can include runs to the hardware, office supply, drug store, and occasional airport runs.
We like to think of the Camp Steward as the person who makes camp a home for the week. Your role is more than just cooking, cleaning and provisioning. You may find yourself tending to a scraped knee, soothing a homesick heart, or sharing a late night laugh with the camp collaborators. This position requires excellent time management and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
With set-up and breakdown, the term of employment is from 19 June - 24 August.
Camp sessions run from 25 June - 19 August.
The steward will live on-site and will plan to remain at camp except for provisioning runs and their personal respite time (post breakfast on Saturday through dinner prep on Sunday).
Salary average is $750 per week with adequate experience, and includes room and board. A current food handler card for the State of California (obtainable online), a valid driver’s license, and the ability to pass a background check are all mandatory.
