A Simple Concept

Once again, it starts with a sketch. We showed yesterday's model to our friend Michael and he pointed out some issues with our initial concept. That lead to a discussion of nautical engineering, hydrodynamics, and some vocabulary lessons.
Who, Does What?

From our sketch, we break down the project into areas of development that can be done in parallel.
From Sketch to Tape

We convert the nebulous scale of the sketch to definitive dimensions on the Tinkering School lab table.
Easy-peasy

It turns out that Jiro and Tyler got the easy job, and they finish the sail long before the rest of the team gets much wood screwed together.
Darth Vader's Surfboard

The boat takes shape now that the deck actually exists. Looking at it, we begin to wonder if we still have a shot at the boat beauty pagent.
Girls and Power Tools

The Rotozip turns out to be a real crowd pleaser.
A Silent 'L'?

It takes us all afternoon to decide that the 'L' in caulking really is silent. Well, actually, it takes all afternoon for everyone else to convince
me that the 'L' is silent.
At the Stern

While Sofia and Maxine work out the mounting for their fabulous rudder, Robyn and Sam get the hull braces in.
Ship Shaping

With the hull on, the, uh, shapely lines of our little dinghy/skiff/prow begin to take shape.
Shear Wall

Theo's got it goin' on with the shear panel. He and Azra are hurrying to get it locked down so that the bow can be finished.
Driving Screws Again...

After last years rollercoaster project, Sam is wondering if it all boils down to driving screws. "Yup," says Hanna.
The Art Crew

Maxine and Sofia get busy with the drawing and caligraphy. Still no official name for the boat.
It's Complicated

One thing about our design - it is almost all 90 degree angles... except in the bow. Gever and Tyler work it out one weird angle at a time.
Mutiny to the Art Crew

With no more tasks, Theo and Azra join in on the illustrations.
Alone With Her Designs

When the others have tired of doodling, Sofia soldiers on alone creating one beautiful image after another on every flat surface of the boat.
A Rudder at Last

With the finished rudder mounted, Maxine gets in the boat and gives it a test drive.
What he Does When Everyone is Gone

"Make Your Own Pizza Night" draws the tinkerers up to the house leaving Gever and Jiro alone in the studio. Gever climbs aboard and dreams of far Tortuga.
Make Your Own Pizza

At the end of a shipwrights day, Sofia and Jiro concoct their culinary masterpieces.
