Invent an Insect - Day 1 - Week 4 (Mark Day School)

Welcome to Summer Tinkering Camp! First, the information our tinkerers were excited to learn… after lunch today, we revealed the project theme

Then, the collaborators went around the circle reading insect facts to get our creativity flowing, such as:

• Insects have exoskeletons, meaning that their bones are on the outside of their body!

• Houseflies find sugar with their feet, which are 10 million times more sensitive than human tongues!

• Dragonflies can fly straight up and down to hover like a helicopter, and can fly up to 35 miles per hour.

Our design session followed with tinkerers sketching ideas for mash-up insects, either with many legs or with wings.

But in order to start building our creations, we must be skilled with tools and we must know how to better work as a team. So the morning was spent discussing goals for the week and group agreements, and then we were busy with tool training for our three main tools: cordless drills, clamps, and chop saw (aka mitre saw).
