Along the Tapajós - Day 4 - Week 4 (Mark Day School)

We have such a dedicated group of tinkerers working to build row boats to reach the house on stilts, a 16-foot long dock, and even a slide! We definitely work hard and play hard, too, as evidenced by all of the smiles during lunch today. We’re a crew that look out for each other, help where we can, and lend our ideas when something new needs to be figured out.

We had a moment where we needed almost the whole camp to move a large structure: the dock. We’re constantly practicing our goal of collaborating by assisting each other in large and small groups. Much of the work is done in pairs or groups of three with tinkerers communicating well: “You drill a pilot hole and I’ll screw in the screw.”

Drilling at an angle without the bit slipping is difficult but we teach a way to do this by first drilling a shallow hole perpendicular to the wood and then using that hole as a guide.
