Dessert World! - Day 2 - Week 3 (Mark Day School)

We’ve been talking about desserts and everyone wants to know if we will be making real desserts. A cooking class is a wonderful thing but for this week, we are tinkerers. So we build. And we use our imaginations to create the illusion of dessert.

How do we do that? Today, we talked about conveyor belts and chain reactions, interactions with levers, and boats that float along a candy river. We’re making a magic dessert maker and the insides are going to be a secret. How does the dessert get made? You may never know but you will be astounded and amazed!

And how do we progress from ideas in our minds to drawings on paper to three-dimensional structures? With tools, of course! Today saw lots of drilling, clamping, and measuring. And a fair amount of cutting, too. Our chop saw room is almost always in use with an adult collaborator supervising and kids making their β€œready call” making sure everyone is wearing protective eye & ear wear and giving a thumbs up.

We start each day with an opening circle and end each day with a closing circle. It’s our way of bookending the experience for the tinkerers and its a time to share our excitement and to mention examples of how we’re reaching our #CampGoals. Today’s sharing was all about trying harder than usual but there was a sprinkling of stories about making new friends and making mistakes and learning from them. It’s always a sweet (yes, another dessert pun) moment to end our day on a high note.
